The first day I started really populating this site with content was September 11, 2001. Today the US government announced that they have killed and taken possession of Osama Bin Laden's body. I'm sure it's not the end of wars because they're big business but, at this point the prime enemy for the last ten years has been taken out.

Lifehacker's Food Week

It's food week at Lifehacker and they published my tip and photo!

Trade Vegetables for Beer in Your Fridge Crisper

Your crisper is supposed to control humidity and keep your leafier vegetables crisp. That only works if you actually see and use those vegetables—otherwise, the results are pretty tragic. Reader Ian Service has a solution for forgetful types, involving bottles.

Note: We included this tip in Friday's Tips Box roundup, but, being food week and all, we though it could use a bit more exposure.

I don't know about you guys, but without a window into my fridge's crisper, I completely forget about everything that goes in there. Many a half-used head of lettuce, or scissored Italian parsley has turned brown and countless cucumbers have turned into disgusting puddles of water in my vegetable crisper... until now.

Like any other discovery, it happened completely accidentally. This summer, I was stocking the fridge with beer but I was completely out of room so I opened the crisper. It was empty and then it dawned on me, I'm never going to forget beer! So I stocked the drawer with beer and since then I've repeated the process countless times. The beer has never gone bad because unlike a celery heart with a pair of stalks missing, beer is unforgettable.

I hope this sparks an "Aha moment" for someone else out there, it may just save you from having to soap up a smelly veggie drawer.

Ed. note: Again, the crisper does have its legitimate benefits, especially those with sliders to control the relative humidity in the container. But we totally sympathize with a pragmatic approach to making your vegetables more visible, and more likely to get used in tonight's dinner, while leaving the stuff you'll know where to find in the bin.

A few friends of mine have started the DIYode Makers Club whose goal is to set up a workshop where people can go and create something real in Guelph. Their goal is to create a community workshop to inspire people to make, share and play and they'll be running workshop events to teach new skills to community members. They did a very successful rocket workshop where kids built paper rockets and then they launched them into the air and did a more technical workshop using Arduino boards which give a relatively easy introduction to programming electronics.

Please take a moment to go to http://www.refresheverything.ca/diyode and then click the button to vote.

I had a couple errands to run today, hopped in the car, put down all the windows and opened the sun roof to let the heat out of the car. Since there's construction on the bridge that I have to drive under, I decided to quickly close the sunroof. Good thing I did too because as I drove through, the workers dislodged a pretty decent chunk of concrete from the bridge overhead and it fell on the bar between my windshield and the passenger window and hit the side view mirror casing. It then fell into the car and seemed to have scuffed the seat a bit. It wasn't until after I was investigating the damage with my camera that I saw the fist sized imprint on the passenger head rest that the chunk of concrete made. Good thing I didn't have any passengers on board.

Needless to say, I'll be driving with my windows closed through that construction from now on.

Last week we were able to get away to Eunice's cottage on the French River. It was great to get out of town for a while and just relax. Weather was wonderful and even when it was hot, the humidity wasn't too bad. Whenever you're by the water, it never seems to get out of control.

Cricket had a great time swimming as expected and she even swam out to us while we were in the water, without the need for us to throw something in for her to get. Did a little canoeing around the river. Cricket came along for that too. It really makes you appreciate how massive the river is as you can paddle around in what feels like a bay for hours and you still haven't scratched the surface of the river itself. Perhaps one day I'll canoe a chunk of it.

Also took some time to shoot some humming birds... with the camera.

Chill Pill Required

Dropped off the Mrs to do a presentation for the Girl Guides who are having a big week-long camp and for the most part they were happy people who were happy to have the participation. There were however some older camp leaders who were obviously running low on patience and a brought a lot of memories back to me.

When I was in Scouts and Ventures and we ran into Guides, Pathfinders or Rangers at some kind of co-ed function they would always go on and on about how we got to do whatever we want. Of course we begged to differ, because we got in our fair share of trouble. But when I think about the countless hours we spend wandering around Goodyear Memorial's 104 hectare property unsupervised throughout the many weekends we spent up there, they did have it a lot worse. We'd learn how to do practical things like make a fire, snare food if we were lost in the woods, play with knives for hours on end or go through an obstacle course made from logs and rope by kids only a few years older than us. They'd tell us about knitting, excessive crafts and not being able to go do stuff fun stuff like recklessly tobogganing down an icy road for hours.

Kids are being padded these days. Gone are the all wooden playgrounds with pea gravel where you could shimmy across the top of the beam which holds up the swings only to get a splinter while risking the 25foot fall. Now it's all Fibertop padding and a completely lack of merry-go-rounds that produced more Gs than you could possibly withstand so you inevitably flew off. I think the Girl Guides was like Scouts with that padding added when I was that age.

The point of Scouting, if you ask me, is to learn to become independent and that's something you can't do if you're not allowed to try crossing the creek using a branch hanging from a tree as leverage. You won't fall in but you also won't solve the problem of getting across the river for yourself.

Many of the Guiders are perfectly logical people who let their kids learn and have fun while doing it, but there are a number of leaders who make rules for the sake of making rules and don't let their kids run mucks, which is what being at camp is all about. Organized chaos... possibly safe.

Fortunately, since I've grown up, Scouts Canada is now open to boys and girls so even if we weren't having a boy, my kid would still never have to be a Girl Guide.
